Behind-the-Scenes

Meet Nicole Scherbina, Assistant Brand Manager

What do you do?

I work on the business side of the Toy Team. (Need three pallets of plush moved across a border? That’s me!)

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A lawyer. Only because I didn’t know working at a toy company was an option.

I can’t live without…

My partner and our cats! Okay, and my favourite cast iron frying pan (don’t tell my partner and our cats).

Who do you admire most?

My grandmothers, hands down. They taught me practical things in the kitchen, like how to make soup to soothe any sickness (the secret is always white vinegar), and practical things about the world. I learned there’s more struggle in someone’s life than you’ll ever see from the outside, and people deserve more kindness than we usually offer. (And seriously, white vinegar.)

What is your idea of fun?

Making Swiss meringue buttercream. It fluffs up like magic!

Favorite toy growing up?

I loved my She-Ra: Princess of Power Crystal Castle. At least I thought I did, until I saw my brother’s Castle Grayskull, which had a cool microphone and wasn’t Pepto Bismol pink. (RIPPED OFF.)

Best thing about kids...

My partner and I don’t have kids, so the best thing about kids is being able to bribe them without worrying about the long-term repercussions!

Sago Mini is magical because…

Where else are you going to find a 4 ft. stuffed rabbit on your desk in the morning? Also, I hear they’ve got a Yeti renting out the server room. Yes, downtown rent is that crazy!

"Favourite shake: rainbow sherbert + chocolate. Not as gross as it sounds!"

Best advice:

Travel carry-on only. It will change your life, and makes travel so much easier.

Hidden talent:

Talent is a strong word, but I’ve taken up the cello recently. I play at least four versions of Twinkle that won’t make your ears bleed.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the Kawartha Lakes. I not only know Kawartha Dairy ice cream, I scooped it every summer for four years. (Favourite shake: rainbow sherbert + chocolate. Not as gross as it sounds!)

Proudest DIY:

I changed a bathroom faucet once and felt as proud as if I’d renovated the whole bathroom.
